# Creating a subject not in the Timetable

To set up a non-timetabled subject for example; an intervention group, PSHE or English literature (as many schools will timetable English for KS4 on their timetable but require to track both English Language and English Literature) a new course will need to be created.

Set up a new course i.e. PSHE from **Curriculum \> Courses \> +Add course.** Add the course name and other mandatory fields marked with a red star. Select any optional fields and complete as appropriate.

Select Next, enter the subject name, add a subject code and select a department then save. If the course cover more than one academic year the details of Department will need filling in for each academic year - accessed from tabs at the top of this example.

From the Course page of the new course created scroll to the Groups section to add a new group. Select "**+Add group**".

Alternatively you can use the Group upload page from **Curriculum \> Groups \> Group Upload** which will create the groups with students for the newly created course.

See article for [Managing group memberships](https://support.go4schools.com/mis/managing-group-memberships) to add students or information below.

**To retain a group structure - Method 1**

If the PSHE groups have the same group structure as registration groups or English Literature has the same group structure as English, you can keep the group memberships but use a new subject and group code. A modal will display to Add a new group.

You will then see the group at the bottom of the page. Repeat the process to add more groups.

Once the groups are created go to the source group - **Curriculum \> groups \> Select group,** and from the group page select all students by ticking the box to the left of name and then choose the option to **copy to group** by first clicking **Selected items**.

If the source group is a registration group **Go to\> registration groups \> Select group**.

A modal will display to copy the students in the group adding the destination group details.

The students will be copied to the group in the new subject. This can be checked on the courses page and viewing groups to see the student count in each group.

**To retain a group structure - Method 2**

**Once the group has been created, click the name of the group (or navigate to Curriculum \> Groups \> Select group)**

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-10-2026-10-24-47-1059-AM.png?width=670&height=107&name=undefined-Apr-10-2026-10-24-47-1059-AM.png)

Use **+Add students** which will open up a student selector modal.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-10-2026-10-24-46-3573-AM.png?width=670&height=116&name=undefined-Apr-10-2026-10-24-46-3573-AM.png)

Students can be added by year groups, registration group, or it is possible to search for individuals. By clicking the 'All' next to a registration group will automatically select all students from the group and add them to your new group. This includes being able to select pre-admission students.

The modal also has a CSV upload option if you have created a list of students you only need their UPN to add to the group.

**Add a teacher to Non-timetabled group**

To add a teacher from the group page - **Curriculum \> Groups \> Select group**, in the overview section start to type the teachers name in the 'teacher' box and then select the teacher and save.

### **Populating group by group upload**

Once the groups are created in the new course you can also populate by using the Groups upload page by downloading existing groups editing out all subjects except the subject and group structure you require, then setting the destination subject and group to upload the file.
