# Setting up a new Year group

If a school has changes to the year group structure new year groups can be added via course management.  By creating a new course assigned to the relevant year group this will then create the year group within the MIS. 

For example a middle deemed secondary school might need to add Year 9, or an all-though school may need to add Nursery year groups. 

**Permissions**

To set up a new year group permissions required are from **Curriculum**:

- Can view curriculum
- Can manage curriculum

And **School management**:

- Can manage future academic years
- Can manage school future academic year set up

**Add a new year group: example**

To add a new Foundation stage year group go to **Curriculum \> Courses \>+Add course.**  In the modal select the Year group you need to add for the new course. These will include all National curriculum year groups from Early years to Year 14.

There are also options for **'Mixed year class'** and **'National curriculum not followed**'. Which can be used for alternative curriculum timetabling and vertical groupings. 

Add in the course details then select Next.

Ensure if the course is to be timetabled the Subject codes matches that used in the timetable software.

Once saved when viewing the course management page you will see the new year group created in the year group list:
