# Allocating students to a detention session
Once a student has been issued a behaviour event that leads to a managed detention, they will appear in the detention allocation pool which can be accessed via the **Allocate detentions** link in the manage section of the behaviour menu:
Unallocated students can be filtered by the columns to refine the selection. The filters are text based, besides the event date, and will use the text you enter in each column to filter the list. This will allow you to use the **Select all** tick box to assign multiple students to a single session. If you'd like to assign students individually, you can select the tick box next to the students instead.
Once you've selected the students to assign, clicking on the **Allocate** button will bring up a pop up that you can use the selections at the top to change your time period, to then assign the students to a session. There is a link to show past sessions as well, which is useful to add a student to a detention session they may have already attended, but were not allocated to.
If you have inadvertently selected a student that you don't want to assign at this point, you can use the **X** to remove them from the left pane. Once a detention has been selected GO 4 Schools will show the students current state.
- Student names will appear blue once allocated to a session.
- If the student has already been allocated to the same session, their name will appear twice in the list (once for each behaviour event).
- If the student has already been allocated to another session run concurrently, they will appear in red. At this stage, the detention manager can make the decision to remove the student from one of the sessions, or to keep them in both.
GO 4 Schools will also show the detention manager if a session is over capacity - although this will not prevent the saving of the allocations, nor will it prevent the session from occurring.
Once saved, you can view students allocated to detentions by choosing the **Allocated** tab of the allocations page, and complete several actions:
- See only concurrent detention sessions to check clashes.
- Select a quick pick by date to view upcoming detention allocations.
- See all information about the session i.e. supervisor, current capacity, location, allocated students, times and dates.
- Remove either individual students (using the **X** next to their name), or all allocations from a session (using the **Delete all allocations from this session** button.)
- Change the filter to look at past detentions and those allocations.
**Note**: Removing a student from a session will result in them being added back to the unallocated list. This will allow you to re-allocate the student to another session, or remove them from the behaviour event if need be.
