# Analysing year 13 performance by level 3 maths attainment

The DfE had an ambition for the **overwhelming majority** of young people to study maths to age 18 by 2020. As a result of this, individual school data was published from 2017 to show the percentage of students who achieved GCSE maths grade 4 or above by the end of Key Stage 4 who go on to achieve an approved Level 3 maths qualification. Whilst the DfE have not updated their guidelines on 16-18 measures since July 2019 or published school level data for 2020 or 2021 this is still a recognised measure which schools should monitor.

There are detailed explanatory notes for the measure in the DfE [16-18 guidelines document](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/819734/16-18_Accountability_Measures_Technical_Guide_July_2019.pdf) (from pg. 33) and a summary of how the measure works below.

**In scope** of the measure means all students who have achieved a Grade 4 or above during Key Stage 4 which the DfE outlines as a standard pass. These students are deemed to be the students who are able to study a Level 3 maths qualification.

Students who retake Maths (as all must do who do not achieve a standard pass) and achieve a standard pass in Year 12 or Year 13 are not **in scope** of this measure.  These students will be included in the [English and maths progress measure](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/ks5-level-2-english-and-maths-progress-measures). No student will be included in both measures.

In order to have “achieved” a Level 3 maths qualification students must pass a grade in any of the DfE approved qualifications. Approved Maths qualifications are those that count in the TechBacc,  see 6.35 (page 34) of the DfE [16-18 guidelines document](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/819734/16-18_Accountability_Measures_Technical_Guide_July_2019.pdf) and are flagged in the in guidance showing discount codes for all qualifications approved for [performance tables](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/16-to-19-qualifications-discount-codes-and-point-scores). The most frequently entered level 3 qualifications in schools, A level, AS level and Core Maths are all included.

GO 4 Schools can track the Level 3 maths measure throughout the year, by using your target and progress grades, as well as being able to see this statistic when results are uploaded as actual grades.

**How is Level 3 Maths attainment calculated?**

GO 4 Schools will look at all students in a cohort for a **specific** academic year i.e. Year 13 and calculate how many students are in scope of the measure. This is displayed in Fig. 1 as the count.

For those students who did not study at your school in Year 11 then those students need to have their actual GCSE Maths grades uploaded in to the system. GCSE Maths can be uploaded for students by going to Grades\>Actual grades and rolling back to the academic year when the results were achieved to then upload exam grades using UPN, QAN, Grade.  These students will not be added to your Year 11 cohort statistics as they were not enrolled in Year 11 for that academic year.

Hovering over the percentage figure for each target and progress grade will give you the number of students who are achieving the measure. This is a grade E or above in A level or AS level or a pass or above in Core Maths.

If a student who is on roll in Year 13 has passed a Level 3 qualification in Year 12 then they will be included in the percentage for the actual grade. If you want these grades to be included in any of the other grades these grades must be set to include Actual grades, in your [grade settings](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/grade-and-residual-settings).

As of writing (October 2021), GO 4 Schools cannot include school leavers from previous academic years who have met the measure. For example, a student may have entered the 6th form with a grade 6 in GCSE Maths. They then achieved a Grade D at AS level before leaving the school at the end of that academic year. This may make your figure slightly different to the official figure if/when published.

**Students who move from one institution to another during Post 16 study**

In 6.38 of the [16-18 guidelines document](https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/631204/16-18_Accountability_Measures_Technical_Guide.pdf) it is outlined that if a student already has an approved Level 3 maths qualification (from either key stage 4 or an earlier 16-18 institution) that student remains in scope for the current institution only if they achieve another approved level 3 maths qualification.

If you have a student coming on roll that has already achieved a Level 3 Maths qualification at another institution and is not taking another at your 6th form they are considered not in scope for your school. So do not upload this student’s Maths result.

**Students who gain a Level 3 Maths qualification in Key Stage 4 from your school**

A student who has already achieved a Level 3 Maths qualification at Key Stage 4 at your school and is not taking a Level 3 Maths qualification in Key Stage 5 will currently appear in GO 4 Schools as being “in scope” and will not have be deemed to have “achieved” a Level 3 Maths qualification. The correct category for this student to be in is not in scope. If you have a student who meets these criteria please raise a support ticket.

**Can Level 3 Maths attainment be calculated for Year 12?**

The Level 3 Maths attainment statistic will appear in Year 12 and calculate for all students as long as a Key Stage 4 Maths result has been uploaded.

**Level 3 Maths attainment in GO 4 Schools – Focus groups**

Level 3 Maths attainment can be viewed by focus group in the same way as all other key statistics in GO 4 Schools. Focus groups are called Student attributes in GO 4 Schools and are split in to three main types.

Schools can use System attributes (those which pull through from your MIS such as Sex below), Special Attributes (those which GO 4 Schools has created but need to be populated by you such as Disadvantaged) and Custom Attributes (Context specific groups such as Year 13 concerns) to analyse data. More information on how to set up and use Student attributes can be found in the Student Attributes section of the School Manger’s guide.

Fig. 2 is an example of Level 3 Maths attainment with Sex selected as a focus group (This has been selected from the Main Year 13 statistics page and clicking on the focus group link). The gap value will appear if there are two values (and no blanks) in an attribute.

**Level 3 Maths attainment in GO 4 Schools – Analysing individual performance**

By clicking on the current grade in Fig. 1. (highlighted in red) this will give you the individual data that underpins the headline statistic (see Fig. 3).

There is a student who is blank in the explorer view. This is because they do not have a Key Stage 4 maths grade uploaded as an actual result. Most commonly these students are those who have entered Year 12 after completing Year 11 at another institution. These students are therefore not being counted as in scope for this measure. The GCSE result for maths needs to be uploaded to GO 4 Schools.

Focus groups can be added (add/remove columns) to look in detail at students from school interest groups (i.e. disadvantaged) who are meeting/not meeting the measure.
