# Combined Science Double Award
**New Combined Science qualifications:**
From September 2016 many students will be studying one of the Combined Science qualifications.
- 60186124 Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science
- 60186872 OCR Level 1/2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science A (Gateway Science)
- 60186902 OCR Level 1/2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science B (Twenty First Century Science)
- 6018758X AQA Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science: Trilogy
- 60187608 AQA Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science: Synergy
- 60187657 WJEC Eduqas Level 1/Level 2 GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science
The new Combined Science qualifications are double awards (which count as two GCSEs) and are awarded points on a 17 point scale.
### **Re-formatting Target Grades**
When uploading or downloading grades, some schools have experienced difficulties with excel assuming 5/5 is a date. The format can easily be amended by using the following steps:
1. Highlight any columns that contain combined science grades
2. Right click your mouse and select "Format Cells...."
3. In the Number tab select the Custom category and in the Type box enter the following: d/m
4. Select the OK button
5. (Important note: These steps will need to be repeated each time you open the file as csv files do not retain formatting.
Your data may be without a forward slash i.e. 55 - in that case, use the following formula in Excel to apply the correct format:
=LEFT(**B2**, 1)&"/"&RIGHT(**B2**, 1)
Where B2 is the cell with the grade.
### **Displaying Grades**
GO 4 Schools has chosen to display the grades as 5/5 rather than 5-5 because many schools will use fine grades e.g. 5/5+ , 5/5 , 5/5- and using a hyphen then becomes confusing e.g. 5-5+, 5-5, 5-5-
### **Contribution to Attainment 8 and Progress 8**
These qualifications listed above, are eligible to be counted in the Ebacc slot of the Attainment 8 and Progress 8 calculations. When used to fill one slot of the Ebacc bucket in the A8 calculation, the points will be halved. So for example, if a student’s highest grades in Ebacc subjects are 8 for history, 7 for French and 7/6 for combined science then the combined science will be used to fill the 3rd slot in the Ebacc bucket with 6.5 points, giving a total of 21.5 points for the Ebacc bucket of the A8 score. This is in accordance with the response we have received from the DfE confirming that the point score will be the average of the two grades for combined science (i.e. 8/7 will have a point score of 7.5).
These double award grades are allocated the following points:
- 9/9 18
- 9/8 17
- 8/8 16
- 8/7 15
- 7/7 14
- 7/6 13
- 6/6 12
- 6/5 11
- 5/5 10
- 5/4 9
- 4/4 8
- 4/3 7
- 3/3 6
- 3/2 5
- 2/2 4
- 2/1 3
- 1/1 2

### **Grading Scheme**
As there is presently no information available as to the percentage needed to achieve each grade these have been set sequentially in GO 4 Schools when using the fine grading scheme, with marks of 99% being awarded grade 9/9+ and marks of 3% being awarded the lowest grade. As for all qualifications assigned to markbooks, schools should review the grading scheme and edit the grade boundaries appropriately. If you want to use only single grades rather than double grades for assessments, then you should edit the marksheet grading scheme for each marksheet. You can either create a grading scheme from scratch, or use a school scheme that you have previously created (see Internal Grading scheme section in the School Managers Guide) and use advanced scaling to control how the grades are mapped to the markbook grades.
