# Common feed rule scenarios

Below are some very common scenarios that can be addressed by feed rules.

**Scenario 1: Creating subjects which are not timetabled in your MIS (Primary schools)**

As students tend to be taught in their registration groups, it is unlikely that you would have timetabled subjects in your MIS which would create subjects in GO 4 Schools. If you wish to record assessment details for a subject named English reading, you would need feed rules to create the subject.

Rule to add:

1. Add a rule to **copy** all of the year group registration groups into a new subject called "English reading", retaining their original structure. This will create a new subject called "English reading" containing all of the registration groups, while leaving the groups in their original registration subject.

**Scenario 2: GCSE English and English literature**

Most schools only timetable one English subject, and then split the lessons as teacher's see fit. Since GCSE is awarded as two separate subjects, and statistics are calculated using both subjects, it is strongly recommended to have separate markbooks.

Rule to add:

1. Add a rule to **copy** all of the year 11 English groups into a new subject called "English literature", retaining their original structure. This will create a new subject called "English literature" containing all of the English groups, while leaving the groups in their original English subject.

**Scenario 3: GCSE science**

Science is timetabled as just science in your MIS, but some groups are studying triple science, some double science etc. Since each GCSE is awarded separately we strongly recommend having a separate markbook for each course to ensure the overall statistics are correct.

Rules to add:

1. Add a rule to **copy** the groups studying triple into a new subject called "Biology", retaining their original structure. This will create a new subject called "Biology" containing all of the triple groups, while leaving the groups in their original science subject.
2. Add a rule to **copy** the groups studying triple into a new subject called "Chemistry", retaining their original structure. This will create a new subject called "Chemistry" containing all of the triple groups, while leaving the groups in their original science subject.
3. Add a rule to **copy** the groups studying triple into a new subject called "Physics", retaining their original structure. This will create a new subject called "Physics" containing all of the triple groups, while leaving the groups in their original science subject.
4. Add a rule to **delete** the triple groups from the original science subject.

Note that rules 3 and 4 could also be replaced by a single rule to **move** the groups to physics, as that would create the "Physics" subject, while also removing the groups from the science subject.

**Scenario 4: GCSE maths**

You may split your GCSE maths groups by qualification. Since the assessment criteria for each qualification are likely to differ significantly, we strongly recommend having a separate markbook for each course.

Rule to add:

1. Add a rule to **move** the maths groups studying the alternative qualification into a new subject called "Maths B", retaining their original structure. This will create a new subject called "Maths B" containing those groups, while leaving the remaining groups in the original maths subject.

**Scenario 5: Split ICT subject by students**

You may timetable a single ICT subject and have students studying two qualifications but being taught at the same time. You may need to move students from within groups to new groups to accurately track which qualification they are studying.

Rule to add:

1. Add a rule to **move** the students studying the alternative qualification into a new subject called "ICT B", creating a new group. This will create a new subject called "ICT B" containing those students, while leaving the remaining students in the original ICT subject.

Note that if the students are in multiple groups you'll need to create a rule for each group. If you want to put all the students into a single group, we'd recommend creating the feed rule for one group, and then once that group is created, create your other rules to **move** students to the existing group.

**Scenario 6: English intervention group**

You may have students who have been selected for additional tuition in English. They are currently taught in variety of different groups in English, but you want to track them in the English subject as if they were taught as a single group.

Rule to add:

1. Add a rule to **add** the students to a new group in your English subject. This will create a new group within English containing those students, while leaving them in their original English group.

Note that if you want to create a completely separate markbook for these students, you can choose to add them to a new subject rather than to the existing English subject.

**Scenario 7: Subjects on rotation**

Students are split into groups A and B. In term 1 group A is studying subject X and group B is studying subject Y. In term 2, they swap and group A is studying subject Y and group B is studying subject X. You want to have assessment data in GO 4 Schools for both groups in both subjects regardless of whether it is term 1 or term 2.

Rules to add:

1. Add a rule to **copy** all groups in subject X to subject Y.
2. Add a rule to **copy** all groups in subject Y to subject X.
