# Creating a feed rule
The first two steps for adding a rule are always the same:
1. Click the **Add a new rule** button on the **Feed rules** page.
2. Choose the type of rule that you want to create from the list offered.
Once you have chosen the type of rule you want to create, you will be guided through one or more steps that collect the information required to specify the rule fully.
For instance:
- If you are changing a subject's name and/or year group, you will be asked to choose the subject you want to change, and then you will be asked to specify the new name and/or the new year group for the subject.
- If you are deleting a group you will be asked to choose the subject containing the group and then the group(s) to delete.
Once you have reached the end of the sequence of steps, you should click **Save** to close the popup window (which will add the rule to the bottom of the list of feed rules) and then click **Save** at the bottom of the page to save the rule to the database.
**Notes:**
- If you choose the **All groups** option when selecting groups in a subject to move, copy, etc. GO 4 Schools will apply the changes to all groups that it ever sees in the feed for the chosen subject. This can be useful if you expect the groups linked to a subject to change over time, e.g. due to carousels.
- By default, only subjects and groups known to contain students are displayed when you specify a rule. If you need to choose an empty subject or group for any reason, you can select the option in the interface **Show empty subjects and groups**.
- You can download CSV files containing lists of feed rules that you have created in the current academic year, as well as the previous academic year using the links at the bottom of the page. This may be useful at the start of a new academic year to review rules from the previous year.
- If you want to remove a feed rule as it is no longer required, we would recommend that the **Enabled** box is unticked rather than deleting the rule. That way you have a record of old rules in case they need reinstating, but also the record is kept in case you want the support team to investigate feed rule issues.
