# Creating charts in GO 4 Schools

Customised charts can be created at Year group level or at subject level. This document will show examples of Bar chart & pivot tables, Scatter plot charts and Residual charts in GO 4 Schools.

Bar charts & pivot tables give a flexible way of exploring data and allow you to summarise the data held in GO 4 Schools for a particular year group or subject. They are particularly good for creating transition matrices.

Scatter charts show the relationship between 2 sets of data; they allow you to quickly see which students are above/below targets and are good for spotting outliers. Often outlying points represent students with missing data.

### **Bar chart & pivot tables for Year group data**

Select year group charts from the year group page.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-04-34-3678-AM.png?width=670&height=93&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-04-34-3678-AM.png)

When selecting a chart think about what you want to display as you can select from a wide variety of data, not all of which makes for suitable charts.

#### **Example 1: Average points by demographic groups**

A pivot table could be used to look at the average point scores for different focus groups.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-05-20-1075-AM.png?width=670&height=443&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-05-20-1075-AM.png)

For **Data** choose Avg Current numeric points per GCSE (or equiv) from the Grades: Aggregated Points

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-06-01-4578-AM.png?width=628&height=553&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-06-01-4578-AM.png)

For **Row**, select a focus group, for example Ethnicity from the Demographic set (the focus groups available to you are dependent upon your school set up of student attributes and attribute sets).

For **Column**, this example is going to use Sex.

This chart will take the average numeric points for each boy of each ethnicity and add them up. To display the average, set the **Aggregation** to Average.

Your selection will be displayed in the area below.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-06-48-8222-AM.png?width=670&height=446&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-06-48-8222-AM.png)

Click on the Draw bar chart and pivot table button to display the chart.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-07-20-6394-AM.png?width=670&height=447&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-07-20-6394-AM.png)

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-07-58-6920-AM.png?width=670&height=741&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-07-58-6920-AM.png)

The above chart is showing us the average point scores for all GCSEs and equivalents broken down by sex and by ethnicity. In this example we can see that the average point score is 4.16, but for Male Gypsy/Roma students it is 2.75. When interpreting the data we should take into account the size of each cohort. If there is only a small number of students then the numbers may not be statistically meaningful.

You can hover over each number in the chart to see a list of students.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-08-40-3496-AM.png?width=670&height=307&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-08-40-3496-AM.png)

Or click on the number to see the list of students with photos. From this list you can go directly to a student page or download the list as a csv file.

To just see the numbers of students then edit the chart definition and replace the Data by selecting Student \> UPN and ensuring aggregation is Count.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-09-20-1389-AM.png?width=670&height=271&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-09-20-1389-AM.png)

Aggregation controls how students are combined, so this will simply count the number of students. Using UPN will ensure that each student is counted as unique.

**Filtering and Saving charts**

Having drawn a chart, this can then be filtered by any of your student attributes such as Pupil Premium, or Students in an intervention group.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-09-56-4119-AM.png?width=670&height=239&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-09-56-4119-AM.png)

Click on the cog and choose your filters. You can select multiple filters, for example EAL and Pupil Premium.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-10-30-4605-AM.png?width=670&height=53&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-10-30-4605-AM.png)

### **Saving the Chart**

To save the chart for recall later, enter a title for the chart and click the save button.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-11-08-6174-AM.png?width=670&height=227&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-11-08-6174-AM.png)

A list of saved charts is shown on the right. This includes some pre-defined system ones.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-11-37-9570-AM.png?width=670&height=251&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-11-37-9570-AM.png)

Selecting a saved chart will load the selected items of data into the table giving you opportunity to review which fields have been selected before drawing the chart. Note the filters are not saved with the chart, but any filters that you have already selected prior to loading a saved chart will be applied.

Some of the system charts may be greyed out and unavailable to you depending on your school data and settings.

Saved charts are stored as cookies on your machine and as such will only be available on the device on which you saved them. Clearing your cookies will remove all saved charts. At the present time it is not possible to share charts with other staff or set them up on their behalf.

#### **Example 2: Average points across all subjects compared to Current grade in French**

This example is still looking at the average numeric points across all subjects (but this time excluding equivalences) but for the column I have picked the Current grade for French listed under Departments.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-12-29-8471-AM.png?width=670&height=119&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-12-29-8471-AM.png)

It shows that students who have a grade 5 in French, average a grade 6.44 in all GCSE subjects.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-13-00-2638-AM.png?width=670&height=233&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-13-00-2638-AM.png)

### **Example 3: Average points achieved in current grade by Attendance band**

Swap the column in the above example to select attendance band.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-13-46-9085-AM.png?width=497&height=281&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-13-46-9085-AM.png)

This now shows the average points achieved by students in each of the attendance bands.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-14-23-8425-AM.png?width=670&height=119&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-14-23-8425-AM.png)

### **Example 4: Comparison of average number of entries for Pupil Premium students**

**![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-14-52-3742-AM.png?width=670&height=581&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-14-52-3742-AM.png)**

**![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-15-24-0452-AM.png?width=618&height=122&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-15-24-0452-AM.png)**

### **Bar chart & pivot tables for Subject data**

There is a separate subject charts page. A link to this is shown on the subject page between the new ribbons and the Key statistics.

Pivot tables are useful for creating transition matrices. They work in exactly the same way as those on the year group page, but the list of data from which you can draw from varies. A simple pivot might be to compare target grades to current grade.

### **Example 1: Compare target grade to current grade**

**![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-16-06-8235-AM.png?width=670&height=214&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-16-06-8235-AM.png)**

**To draw this, select the target and current grades for the row and column. This should be aggregated by a count of the number of students and the best way to identify students is to pick the UPN for the Data field, so each unique student is counted. (The UPN is located under Student in the menu selection.)**

**![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-16-43-3896-AM.png?width=670&height=396&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-16-43-3896-AM.png)**

This chart can be filtered in the same way as shown on the year group chart.

### **Example 2: Compare current grade to the current grade from a previous time**

We could change the row to select Prior Attainment to show breakdown by High, Middle and Low prior attainment groups. This however can be seen in the ribbons. But by using pivot charts we can also compare current grade to previously snapshotted grades and see where students have progressed to a higher grade.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-17-24-0726-AM.png?width=670&height=332&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-17-24-0726-AM.png)

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-17-54-3571-AM.png?width=670&height=289&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-17-54-3571-AM.png)

When selecting a previously snapshotted grade you have the option to pick either from historic grades from where you can pick any grade type (enabled at the time of the snapshot) or from Reports/progress grades where you can pick the progress grade from any snapshot.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-18-27-9958-AM.png?width=670&height=629&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-18-27-9958-AM.png)

#### **Example 3: Compare a marksheet grade to the current grade**

In the subject charts it is also possible to pick from the marksheet data and therefore compare a marksheet grade to the current grade. For example, in French, to compare the grade from the marksheet for Grammar to the current grade.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-19-37-3560-AM.png?width=670&height=344&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-19-37-3560-AM.png)

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-19-47-7765-AM.png?width=652&height=572&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-19-47-7765-AM.png)

You can also pick individual assessments, and so by selecting one for the row and another for the column, you can compare two assessments.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-20-23-0061-AM.png?width=670&height=346&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-20-23-0061-AM.png)

As well as comparing two grades, it is possible to pick any of our student attributes for the row or the column. The student attributes are also available for filtering the charts.

### **Scatter charts for Year group data**

Select year group charts from the year group page.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-20-52-8302-AM.png?width=670&height=93&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-20-52-8302-AM.png)

When selecting a chart think about what you want to display as you are able to select from a wide variety of data, not all of which makes for suitable charts.

Scatter charts are a good way to display two sets of data where there is a correlation and are useful for spotting outliers.

Select the Scatter plot tab on the charts page.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-21-23-9987-AM.png?width=670&height=242&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-21-23-9987-AM.png)

### **Example 1: Compare Total numeric points for Target and Current grade**

Select Total numeric points for the x and y axis from Grades: Aggregated Points (numeric) choosing Target grade for one axis and Current grade for the other.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-22-01-4242-AM.png?width=653&height=573&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-22-01-4242-AM.png)

The points on the scatter plot can be coloured by any student attribute, in this example they are coloured to show boys and girls.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-22-30-2288-AM.png?width=670&height=387&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-22-30-2288-AM.png)

When drawn, the chart will look something like this.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-22-57-9592-AM.png?width=670&height=622&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-22-57-9592-AM.png)

Hovering over a dot will give the exact points and clicking on it will show the name of the student. As with all scatter charts, it is possible for one point on the chart to represent multiple students if they share the same target and current points. When viewing numeric points aggregated for all subjects this is much less likely than if viewing subject data where there is a likely to be a high instance of students with the same target and current grade.

#### **Example 2: Compare Average numeric points for Target and Current grade**

As with the pivot charts, these can be easily changed by editing the chart definition and reselecting data to be drawn, for example, swapping to view by the average points.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-23-33-8153-AM.png?width=670&height=687&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-23-33-8153-AM.png)

For scatter charts where you are comparing to pieces of data that are measured on the same scale then you can add the Display X=Y line. If students are on target, then the dots will be hugging the line. Distance from the line will help us to spot the outliers.

If the two pieces of data have the same scale, but are not related, for example, numeric points on a scale of 1 to 9 against old ks2 levels 3-5, drawing a line would not be helpful because 5 does not hold the same meaning for both axis.

Again, charts can be filtered by any of your focus groups, and they can be saved.

**Example 3: EBacc points**

To plot the EBacc average point score select the data from the list. This example is going to plot Current grade against target grade.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-24-21-0046-AM.png?width=670&height=496&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-24-21-0046-AM.png)

Here we can see an example of an outlier. We can click on the dot to find out who the student is and then go directly to the student page.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-24-51-7169-AM.png?width=611&height=608&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-24-51-7169-AM.png)

**Example 4: Using report attributes**

This example is compares the average effort grade collected in a recent report to the average grade for Attitude to learning. Locate a snapshotted or published report under Reports and snapshots, and at the bottom of the list of subjects is the average report attribute scores, with all the report attributes used in that snapshot listed.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-25-26-0977-AM.png?width=670&height=373&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-25-26-0977-AM.png)

The effort grade could also be plotted against the average current grade. Or some schools download the average residual from the snapshotted report and upload this to a custom attribute and then plot this against the effort. This then shows the relationship between effort and their attainment towards their target.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-25-57-5806-AM.png?width=569&height=563&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-25-57-5806-AM.png)

**Scatter charts for Subject data**

As shown in the section above on pivot charts, there is a separate subject charts page. A link to this is shown on the subject page between the new ribbons and the Key statistics.

Select the Scatter plot tab on the charts page. They work in the same way as on the year group page, but the list of data from which you can draw from varies. A simple example might be to compare target grades to current grade. However, be mindful of the fact that there will be students with the same target grade who also have the same current grade, and so dots on the chart will represent a variable number of students.

**Example 1: Average points for a subject compared to average for all subjects**

The example below is plotting the average points a student has achieved in all GCSEs against the grade achieved in this subject. Students above the line are doing better in this subject than the average of their other GCSEs.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-26-45-2384-AM.png?width=670&height=737&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-26-45-2384-AM.png)

The data selected to draw the above chart is as shown below.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-27-18-3012-AM.png?width=670&height=450&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-27-18-3012-AM.png)

As with all the other charts, it is possible to filter by any system or custom attributes (for example, SEN students, Intervention focus group) and to save the charts.

**Residual charts for Subject data**

As shown in the section above on pivot charts, there is a separate subject charts page. A link to this is shown on the subject page between the new ribbons and the Key statistics.

Select the Residual chart tab on the charts page.

### **Example 1: Compare grade to average GCSE grade in all subjects**

The example below is ranking all students for this subject by their average points for all GCSEs and plotting this against their GCSE grade for this subject.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-27-58-4533-AM.png?width=670&height=663&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-27-58-4533-AM.png)

Where the blue dot is above the red dot, the student is doing better in this subject and where the blue dot is below the red dot then the student is on average doing better in other subjects. Subjects can be expected to have some blue dots above the red line and some below the red line.

This is drawn by selecting the following values:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-28-32-8986-AM.png?width=670&height=339&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-28-32-8986-AM.png)

For **Rank** select the Average numeric points per GCSE (exc.equiv) from Grades: Aggregated Points (Numeric) as shown below![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-29-12-8840-AM.png?width=653&height=404&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-29-12-8840-AM.png)

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-29-32-5969-AM.png?width=650&height=499&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-29-32-5969-AM.png)

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-29-50-2804-AM.png?width=670&height=395&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-29-50-2804-AM.png)

The red dots represent the students’ average points for all GCSEs. The students have been ranked in

order of their average GCSE points. The blue dots represent their GCSE grade in this subject.

Hovering on a red dot gives the rank position followed by the average points for all GCSEs (i.e. of the metric that was selecting for Rank by). Hovering on a blue dot gives the rank position followed by the value for the current grade (i.e. the value of the field that was selected for Value). Clicking on a dot will give the student name.

In this example, the blue dot highlighted is the student ranked 106th (the student with the lowest score is ranked as number 1) and 2.5 is their point score in this subject (i.e. middle of a grade 2).

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-30-40-6316-AM.png?width=685&height=605&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-30-40-6316-AM.png)

Finding the dot for the same ranking on the red line will show this student’s average points.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-31-18-8702-AM.png?width=666&height=588&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-31-18-8702-AM.png)

### **Example 2: View % achieved in past paper compared to current grade**

For a subject it is also possible to select grades or percentages from marksheet data. The example below shows the values for Paper 1 of a past paper with students ranked by the current grade (by percentage).

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-31-56-7600-AM.png?width=933&height=938&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-31-56-7600-AM.png)

This could also be used to visually compare the results from two different past papers. The example below has ranked students by their result in Paper 1 and then plotted their result for Paper 2.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-32-26-1463-AM.png?width=933&height=936&name=image-png-Apr-07-2026-08-32-26-1463-AM.png)
