# Creating seating plan data sets

Seating plan data sets determine the student data that will be available to users when assigning students to a seat on the room layout. This will help them to decide the arrangement of students which best suits their goals of the lesson. For example, if a group has a number of students with disruptive behaviour, teachers may want to see student behaviour scores when creating their seating plan to ensure they don't sit these students together. We recommend limiting the key data shown in seating plans; too much information can lead to the areas for school improvement losing focus and teachers not creating impact with their planning. Please note - only school managers and curriculum leaders will have access to create data sets. Data sets can be created/edited via the **User/Teacher** menu:
Data sets are split into **Whole-school and year group data sets** as well as **Subject datasets**. This allows for preferred sets of data that can be available for all seating plans in a year group, as well as subject specific data sets that allow for subject level data to be included.
Where grade data is included, the data will dynamically adapt to whichever subject is usingit. For example if the data set is being used to seat a maths group, it will show the maths grades and targets. If the same set is used to seat a geography group, it will show the geography grades and targets:
To create a new data set, click the link to **Add new dataset**, you will need to provide a name, choose fields to include, and when complete, set the years/subjects that the dataset will be used for:
Clicking the cog icons will open up a popout to assign to year groups/subjects, as well as add data fields:
When adding fields to your dataset they will appear on the right hand side as you select them. You can choose from a wide range fields available in GO 4 Schools, including custom attributes that you have set up.
When creating a data set, you have the option to **Show data by default**. This option determines whether staff see the data when loading a seating plan view that displays data - by default all seating plans open without data displayed to prevent the accidental display of sensitive data.
