# DfE Attendance codes 2025
This table summarises the standard set of marks available for recording attendance in the GO 4 Schools attendance module to be used for schools in England for start of academic year 2025. For each mark, the suggested restriction level (SRL) is shown, see key below the table - most marks are generally restricted to the Attendance Officer (AO) role only.

| Y1 | Unable to attend due to transport normally provided not being available | 2 | |
| Y2 | Unable to attend due to widespread travel disruption | 2 | |
| Y3 | Unable to attend due to part of the school premises being closed | 2 | |
| Y4 | Unable to attend due to the whole school site being unexpectedly closed | 2 | |
| Y5 | Unable to attend as the pupil is in criminal justice detention | 2 | |
| Y6 | Unable to attend in accordance with public health guidance or law | 2 | |
| Y7 | Unable to attend because of any other unavoidable cause **(additional note must be input)** | 2 | |
| Z | Prospective pupil not on admission register (not on roll) | 2 | |

| Authorised absence | C | Leave of absence for exceptional circumstance | 2 |
| C1 | Leave of absence for the purpose of participating in a regulated performance or undertaking regulated employment abroad | 2 | |
| C2 | Leave of absence for a compulsory school age pupil subject to a part-time timetable | 2 | |
| E | Authorised absence as pupil is excluded, with no alternative provision made | 2 | |
| I | Authorised absence due to illness (NOT medical or dental etc. appointments) | 2 | |
| M | Authorised absence due to medical / dental appointments | 2 | |
| R | Authorised absence due to religious observance | 2 | |
| S | Authorised absence due to study leave | 2 | |
| T | Parent travelling for occupational purposes (Traveller) | 2 | |
| J1 | Approved education activity as pupil is attending interview for employment or for admission to another educational establishment | 2 | |
| AEA | P | Approved education activity as pupil is attending an approved sporting activity | 2 |
| V | Approved education activity as pupil is away on an educational visit or trip | 2 | |
| W | Approved education activity as pupil is attending work experience | 2 | |
| K | Attending education provision arranged by local authority **(additional note must be input)** | 2 | |
| B | Attending any other approved educational activity **(additional note must be input)** | 2 | |
| Unauthorised absence | G | Unauthorised absence as pupil is on a family holiday, not agreed, or is taking days in excess of an agreed family holiday | 2 |
| N | Unauthorised absence as pupil missed sessions for a reason that has not yet been provided | **1** | |
| O | Unauthorised absence as pupil missed sessions for an unauthorised absence not covered by other code / description | 2 | |
| U | Unauthorised absence as pupil arrived after registers closed | 2 | |
| - | Missing mark | 0 | |
\* Note that there is no statistical difference between the two present marks: \\ and /.
Suggested restriction level (SRL):
- 0: Not applied
- 1: Add & edit for All Staff
- 2: Add & edit for Attendance Officer role only
