# Escalating students from a missed detention
Students who are allocated to a detention but don't complete it will reappear in your list of unallocated students once the end time of the detention session has passed. You can find out more about the missed detention(s) by clicking on the red box to the side of the student's name:
For students in this state, you can choose to simply reassign them to a future detention. If your school tracks escalations differently to initial incidents however, there is an ability to escalate the missed detention to a new behaviour type, including events that do not have managed detention follow up actions. This is to assist schools escalating to an exclusion type event which they wouldn't want to assign a detention to. After selecting your students, you need to click on the **Escalate button**:
After confirming your selection of students in the popup, you will be brought to a new behaviour event page, which the students selected attached:
While you can remove students from this page, you are unable to add any further students to the event, nor are you able to re-add students you've removed. If you remove a student in error, you will need to restart the process, or handle that student individually. You can use the **show students** link to show the students attached to the original events.
Once you have selected your escalation event type and saved, the students will re-appear in the allocation table with their new event type - if you have assigned an event that has a managed detention attached to it. If they have been added to an event without a managed detention assigned, they will no longer appear in the allocation tab.
