# GCSE Numeric points columns

When assigning GCSE numeric points to the target grade, we will display the lower boundary of the band. This is because a student will only be required to achieve the lower boundary of a band to hit their target.

When assigning GCSE numeric points to the current grade, we will calculate the numeric point to display depending on the markbook calculation. If your teachers are entering grades (rather than marks) into the markbook, we will assign the midpoint of the boundary as we don't know whether the student has earned a high or low grade.

The difference in these two grade types can appear slightly confusing in the explorers/markbooks until an understanding of the numeric points is achieved.

#### Let's look at an example on the GCSE 9-1 scale.

Grade 3 runs between 3.0 and 3.999 on the GCSE numeric point scale, 30% - 39.9% in the markbook grading scheme.

If a student is targeted a 3, we will display a GCSE numeric point value of **3.0** for this student, as they only need to achieve the lower boundary of the band to hit their target.

Now imagine a grade-entry assessment in the markbook, where a current grade of 3 has been selected by the teacher for this student. As we don't know whether this grade is a high 3 or a low 3 we award the mid-point of the band, and will display **3.5** in the GCSE numeric points column.

Please note that if you are using the new [**residual scheme functionality**](https://www.go4schools.com/schools/Support/KnowledgeBaseArticle.aspx?kbid=34) based on GCSE numeric points, depending on your settings this difference may have an influence on your residual colouring. In this example, the student’s GCSE numeric residual will be +0.5 which may push the student into the “Above target” band, depending on your band boundaries.

If you would like to instead award this student a current GCSE numeric point value of 3.0, you are best changing from grade entry to mark entry assessments. A mark entry assessment out of 10 will assign a GCSE numeric point score of 3.0 to a student earning 3 out of 10. You then also have the benefit of being able to enter decimal grades on the 9-1 scheme directly into the markbook, for example you can type in 3.67 for the student in the mark entry assessment, and this is the GCSE numeric point score that will be awarded to the student.

#### You will see the same functionality with fine grade 9-1 schemes:

- #### Grade 3- runs between 3.0 and 3.329
- Grade 3 runs between 3.33 and 3.669
- Grade 3+ runs between 3.67 and 3.999

A target of 3+ will display as **3.67**. A current grade created from a single grade-type entry of 3+ will be displayed as **3.83** in the current numeric GCSE points column.
