# Introduction to markbooks with the full version of GO 4 Schools
Markbooks are used to collect marks for your subjects. Each markbook contains one or more marksheets and each marksheet contains one or more assessments. Markbooks automatically calculate a current working grade for each student and if you are using the Progress reports module, the grades are automatically fed through into progress reports too. When you create a markbook, you are creating it for the a subject, and not for a specific group. This means that all students taking a subject are assessed using the same structure, which is great for consistency - it allows you to compare like with like. If a student moves from one group to another within the subject their marks follow them.
Once you've set up a markbook, you can re-use it year after year. You can also edit the markbook as and when you need to, e.g. to add new assessments or change how assessments are combined to calculate the current grade for students.
There are three main options for setting up a markbook for a subject:
- Creating one from scratch.
- Copying one that was created earlier for another subject.
- Copying a template created by GO 4 Schools.
No matter the method used, the first step is to browse to the subject page that you want to create a markbook for. At the top of the page is a link to edit markbook clicking this link will take you to the below page:

If you do not have the link, you'll need to ask a school manager to give you **Curriculum leader** access.
