# Linking subjects and flight path charts
Linking subjects and flight path charts
GO 4 Schools allows you to link a subject in one academic year to subjects in previous academic years to model chronological strands of learning, e.g. maths, English, science, technology etc. When subjects are linked in this way, GO 4 School can display flight path charts that show the progress made by students in these strands over time. These charts are displayed on the student page, on the **Student flight path** tab of the **Progress** page:
Subjects are linked using the **Subject settings** page. At the top of each subject page is a link to the settings page for the subject. You can link the current subject to subjects in the same strand of learning in earlier years in order to draw flight paths:
Subject linking will also influence the data that is presented in markbooks on the grades: reports/progress popout. When the predefined column set is selected the current years reports/progress will be displayed. If the + symbol is selected then the previous years' grades will also be displayed. However if subjects are linked, GO 4 Schools will look back to previous actual grades for the linked subjects, and present them in the popout. These linked strands will take some effort to set up first time around if you have multiple years’ of data in GO 4 Schools, but once done all you need to do in terms of maintenance is add new subjects (e.g. from the start of a new academic year) to the ends of existing strands. E.g. if you have set up links from “Year 10 Maths” to “Year 9 Maths” to “Year 8 Maths” for a cohort, when the cohort move to year 11 at the start of the new academic year, you just need to link the new “Year 11 Maths” to the old “Year 10 Maths” subject and all of the other links will be inherited automatically.
