# Removing students from a past detention session
If a student needs to be removed from a past detention this can be completed using the detention allocation page and the allocated tab and the link **Show past sessions**. This will then allow you to browse through the historic detentions, but also search for a student to find just the detentions they've been allocated to.
When searching for a student, you can search for up to ten at a time, clicking on their name in the left panel will put them into the right panel, when clicking **OK** the resulting list will only show you detentions the selected students have been added to.
Where a student can be removed there will be an **X** and clicking it will remove them from the session. This is only possible if the student has not been marked as attended, completed, or had notes entered against them in the register. In those cases, there will be a **n/a** and hovering over that will notify you:
If you have a student in this state, you can open the detention register and remove the attended/complete status, as well as any notes. Please note that the only place detention notes are stored is in the detention register - so if it needs documenting, the recommendation would be to raise a new behaviour event without a detention assignment to retain that.
Once a student has been removed from a detention, they will move back to the **Unallocated** tab, awaiting allocation to a new detention, or removed from the behaviour event. If you need to retain a behaviour event, you can flag the student as not required, or remove them from the existing event, and raise a new event without a detention designation.
**Note**: If you are removing a student from a chain of unattended detentions, you will have to unallocate them from all prior sessions before being able to edit the behaviour event.
