# Requesting consents
The consent listing page will display the status of all ongoing consents as well as allowing the consent administrators to easily view items that require their attention, such as consents that require confirmation as they have been updated by a parent or student. The list can be sorted, filtered, or searched by using the tools available, to find specific students or information. The **Options** feature allows the user to select the columns to display.
Select the specific consent from the list to view the students in scope of the consent. Currently all students will display a status of **Not requested** for a new consent

#### **Using GO 4 Schools communications to collect consents**
Both parents and students can give consent directly in GO 4 Schools. If you have the parental engagement module parents can update their consent permission on the parent website. For students to give consent you will need to have enabled student access to GO 4 Schools. Informing parents or students that their consent is required, can be done using a range of communication channels in GO 4 Schools.
#### **Setting communication channels**
Communication settings are covered in **[this article](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/setting-up-communication-settings)**. For consents, email, notification and SMS are available for parents, but currently there is no ability to send SMS to students. As with all communication settings, you can make individual year group rules as well.
#### **Sending consent communications to students or parents**
In your consent, select the students that you want to send communications to. Then under the **Selected items** dropdown box choose **Send communication**, which will divert you to the content message page.
The recipients are pre-filled from the selection in the consents page and will contain either parent or student contact details (depending on your selection when you first set up the consent). A count of parents/students that cannot be contacted will be visible and these can be checked on the list as the channels will be faded out. Using the recipients tab select your preferred channel of communication, email, notification and/or SMS.
Now in the **Compose** or **Compact view** tab write the communication to inform parents/students that you are requesting consent for a specific purpose. It is worth noting here that the message can be kept short to request the consent as the details of the consent are displayed on the user site. Once complete the message can be previewed prior to sending.
On the consents page the consent status will automatically update to **Requested** and will display a timestamp for the communication sent.
#### **Confirmation of consent received**
Once a parent or student has updated the consent status on the website the consents page will highlight this to the user as requiring further actions. To acknowledge the receipt of the consent the school will need to confirm that they have viewed the change of state, once confirmed, the status of the student consent is updated across the site.
Once an agreed consent status is found the status can be updated either by the parent(s)/student, or manually by the school. The school can view who gave consent and the date this was updated by the user.
The tabs on the consent listing page will also flag actions that require the user to confirm the update of the consent. Once the consent is selected, further status tabs allow the action to be quickly identified and updated.
Sort the **Confirmed** column by 'N' and then select these consents to update to **Confirmed** by the school, this will update the consent.
If staff change the response using the bulk or manual change, it does not require approval.
#### **Manually updating consent status**
Some schools may prefer to give out letters to parents via other third-party communication systems, or to manually administer their consent information. This approach is also useful to manage in year admissions and ad-hoc updates.
Select students from the list included in the consent and choose **Selected items** and then select **Change status**. Options can then be updated to **Requested, Given, Withheld** from the pop out.
The consent status will update as per your selection on the main list of students. The status of the consent will also update on the student page in the school, parent and student sites to display the consent and status.
The status for an individual student can also be changed by selected the student using the **green arrow** and then updating the status manually.
Manually setting the consent to **Requested** will enable students or parents (depending on the initial consent set up) to update this information directly on the website.
