# Roles and permissions
When using the updated GO 4 Schools menus, the staff user access page has been updated to use roles and permissions. While this area is being developed, all current legacy roles have been migrated over, and retain their existing permissions. As further areas of the site are updated, new permissions will become available for use. This functionality allows schools to create custom roles, with a set of permissions, and assign those roles to staff.
Currently there are permissions visible for **[Staff](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/staff-permissions)**, **[Students](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/student-permissions)**, **[Consents](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/consents-permissions)**, **[Documents](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/documents-permissions)**, and **[Roles](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/roles-permissions)**. Each page lists which are currently active, and an explanation for what they control.
Accessing roles is available via the **People** menu, expanding **Staff access and permissions** and selecting **Roles and permissions**:
Initially this will only show the legacy roles as covered in the **[staff access article](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/controlling-staff-access)**. Each column has a sort icon above, and there are options on content to display:
At the top of the page is the option to add a new role:
Clicking this will open a pop up allowing you to name and describe your new role, as well as copy from an existing custom role:
Once the role has been created, it will show in your list without any permissions assigned to it:
Clicking on the name of the role will allow you to view/edit details and permissions assigned to the role, assign/view users with the role, as well as an audit trail of any changes made to the role over time. At the top there is an option to delete the role completely.
By clicking the **Manage** button on the **Permissions** tab, you can assign permissions to the role:
For example, opening the **Consents** permissions, there are options to Deny, Unassign, or Grant rights for managing consent types, viewing, and managing consents. If a permission is also reliant on the user having access to other permissions (e.g. View basic student information), orange warning text will be shown, although this does not prevent the permission changes for the role from being saved.
After assigning the role the additional permissions, you can save the assigned permissions.
Using the **Manage** button on the **Users with role** tab will allow you to quickly assign this role to multiple users using the toggles, or even all users with the toggle at the top of the column. This list is also searchable and sortable:
The **Audit trail** tab tracks all of these changes:
Renaming or changing details of the role is available via the **Details** tab:
By clicking on the **Delete Role** button, a pop up will appear showing you a summary of the role, as well as a count and list of users that will be affected by the change. Deleting the role is permanent, and cannot be reversed:
