# School based grading schemes

Following the removal of KS1-3 National Curriculum levels in England, schools are using a wide range of approaches for assessment.  To enable flexibility schools can create their own measures for assessing student progress using one or both of the following:

**Internal grading scheme**: School defined grading scheme that is like a qualification but managed by schools. This can be used in a markbook, marksheet and assessment grading schemes.  An internal grading scheme can have performance points assigned to enable schools to track based on Key stage 4 or other similar formal or informal points schemes.

**Assessment grading scheme template**: School-defined grading scheme template that is used only to help staff populate marksheet and assessment grading schemes without adding all of the grades by hand.

**Creating an internal grading scheme**

To create an internal grading scheme, navigate to: Curriculum \> Internal Grading Schemes

| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-06-1403-AM.png?width=555&height=302&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-06-1403-AM.png) | Click on the option to create a new internal grading scheme. |
| --- | --- |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-20-0142-AM.png?width=567&height=398&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-20-0142-AM.png) | Give the scheme a name which can be used to easily identify it when being chosen for a markbook. The code, once generated, can also be used to find the grading scheme when setting up a markbook. In the Notes box you may choose to give a brief description of the grading scheme. You may not want to “show this grading scheme in the markbook editor” right away, so it’s best to leave the box unticked until you are completely finished setting up the grading scheme. |

If you wish to set up a GCSE-like grading scheme, you would do something like this…

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-32-4298-AM.png?width=553&height=182&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-32-4298-AM.png)

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-59-1185-AM.png?width=502&height=285&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-53-59-1185-AM.png)

The U grade is a default grade and cannot be removed or changed, also all grades must have unique names.

The scheme allows a range of values to be added depending on the context in which it will be used.  By associating Numeric or APS points to the grades, you are enabling GO 4 Schools to calculate statistics based on this grading scheme and also populate transition matrices and flight paths.

It is not compulsory to apply any points, so if you don’t need GO 4 Schools to calculate statistics you may leave these values blank.

A score can be used to calculate values for students from the markbooks, and display as average points for core subjects on the statistics pages.

**Fine grading**

When creating the internal grading scheme, you will need to select the value of any fine grading increments within your scheme.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-54-54-1721-AM.png?width=600&height=69&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-54-54-1721-AM.png)

In the example scheme for whole grades 9-1 the fine grading is 1 as whole grades are in use.   If the grading scheme incorporated grade 1-, 1, 1+ etc this is 3 fine grades for a grade ‘1’, so the fine grading should be set to 3.

This allows schools to select options for fine grades or whole grades when using outputs in the Data Explorers and ribbons in GO 4 Schools.

**Key statistics grades**

When setting up an internal grading scheme you will also need to set the Key grade that you wish to display in the main key statistics table on the Year group page.  The statistics will display the percentage of students achieving the key grade but a drop down will also allow all grades within the scheme to be viewed.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-55-20-5916-AM.png?width=549&height=160&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-55-20-5916-AM.png)

A default grade can be set, or grades can be varied by Year group. In the example above the key grade is set to show progress across a 9-1 grading scheme.  This will display in the Key statistics:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-55-34-3736-AM.png?width=573&height=246&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-55-34-3736-AM.png)

The score can be used to calculate values for students within the markbook, but will not affect statistics.

**Editing an internal grading scheme**

Navigate to Curriculum \> Internal Grading Schemes

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-55-52-3117-AM.png?width=593&height=214&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-55-52-3117-AM.png)

The table shows whether or not an internal grading scheme is currently being used in a markbook. If a scheme is currently in use the “X” will be greyed out and you will not be able to delete it.

| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-56-18-2065-AM.png?width=573&height=483&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-56-18-2065-AM.png) | If an internal grading scheme is in use you will not be able to add or remove grades. The “U” can never be removed as it is needed to set the lowest grade. You can amend the APS or Score associated with a grade but this will not be reflected in markbooks already using the scheme, only in new markbooks going forward. If you no longer want an internal grading scheme to be used in any new markbooks, you can remove it from the qualification chooser. Click on the Title to edit, then un-tick the option to “show this grading scheme in the markbook editor”. |
| --- | --- |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-56-39-5117-AM.png?width=494&height=283&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-56-39-5117-AM.png) | Now the grading scheme shows as in use and can’t be deleted, but also as not useable in new markbooks. |

**Using an Internal grading scheme in a markbook**

| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-56-57-5806-AM.png?width=500&height=317&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-56-57-5806-AM.png) | From the qualification chooser, you will see the additional option of School Scheme. Click here and filter through until you reach the individual internal grading schemes.  Alternatively you can search on either the name or the code. |
| --- | --- |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-57-12-2243-AM.png?width=505&height=366&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-57-12-2243-AM.png) | You will notice that alongside the internal grading schemes you have created, GO 4 Schools has created copies to be used for the core subjects. One advantage of this, is that where APS points are used GO 4 Schools will use this to decide which subject stats the markbook should contribute to. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-57-18-2010-AM.png?width=586&height=55&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-57-18-2010-AM.png) ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-57-58-9746-AM.png?width=541&height=209&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-57-58-9746-AM.png) | Once selected, GO 4 Schools effectively takes a copy of the grading scheme for use in that markbook. Clicking on Edit will allow you to change marks and cap and Alias the grades if you wish. These changes will only apply to this markbook and will not affect the original internal grading scheme, in the same way that if the original internal grading scheme is edited, the changes will not be reflected in this markbook. |

**Example Internal grading schemes**

Grading schemes can be used to set up a wide range of approaches to assessment including GCSE type grades or Mastery tracking.  They are also extremely useful for setting up markbooks to track the wider curriculum such as Destinations, Careers, Enrichment, or other aspects of data tracking such as reading ages.

**Creating an Assessment grading scheme template**

Schools can now define Assessment grading scheme templates which can be used for marksheet and assessment grading schemes. This will make it easier for schools to use the same grading scheme repeatedly.  For example, when whole grades are required for an assessment where the markbook is using a fine grade scheme.

To create an assessment grading scheme template, navigate to Curriculum \> Assessment Grading Scheme.

| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-58-47-5980-AM.png?width=584&height=269&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-58-47-5980-AM.png) | Click on the option to create a new assessment scheme. |
| --- | --- |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-58-53-3058-AM.png?width=536&height=658&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-58-53-3058-AM.png) | Give the scheme template a name which can be used to easily identify it when being chosen for a markbook.   In the Notes box you may choose to give a brief description of the grading scheme template. You may not want to “show this grading scheme in the markbook editor” right away, so it’s best to leave the box unticked until you are completely finished setting up the grading scheme. |

**Editing an Assessment grading scheme**

Navigate to Curriculum \> Internal Grading Schemes to see your existing scheme templates.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-09-1870-AM.png?width=526&height=233&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-09-1870-AM.png)

Unlike Internal grading schemes, you can add and remove grades at any time, and even delete the template. This is because it is simply a template for use to create a grading scheme within a markbook. It does not retain any connection to the markbook and is not used anywhere else in GO 4 Schools.

**Using an Assessment grading scheme template in a marksheet**

| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-38-4437-AM.png?width=616&height=309&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-38-4437-AM.png) | The Assessment grading scheme templates can only be used with a standard marksheet. Click the Edit link next to Grading scheme. |
| --- | --- |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-46-8059-AM.png?width=318&height=125&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-46-8059-AM.png) | You will be offered three options. You can use the markbook grading scheme, a school-defined grading scheme, or create a grading scheme from scratch. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-53-2766-AM.png?width=350&height=123&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-10-59-53-2766-AM.png) | Choosing to base your grading scheme on a school-defined grading scheme will allow you to use either an Internal grading scheme or an Assessment scheme as a template. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-01-8765-AM.png?width=648&height=322&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-01-8765-AM.png) | Where all of the grades in the chosen scheme are also in the overall markbook grading scheme, there is the option of automatic scaling. This will ensure that if a student achieves a C at the marksheet level, this is counted as a C for the overall grading scheme. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-07-3259-AM.png?width=642&height=333&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-07-3259-AM.png) | If you would prefer to set your own scaling, this can be done using “Advanced scaling”. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-13-9706-AM.png?width=636&height=166&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-13-9706-AM.png) | The advantage of the Assessment grading scheme templates is that they can be reused, and save time. However if you wish to create a new grading scheme, for which a template does not exist, you would choose the third option as shown to create a grading scheme from scratch. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-20-9806-AM.png?width=645&height=184&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-20-9806-AM.png) | You will be provided with the same options for scaling. To add grades click on Add a new grade at the bottom of the grid. |
| ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-25-8224-AM.png?width=652&height=291&name=image-png-Apr-08-2026-11-00-25-8224-AM.png) | By default the grid will populate the grades A-G but these can be renamed and marks changed as required. |

**Example uses of assessment schemes**

Assessment schemes are useful to use in markbooks where teachers may want to record student achievement in their subject in addition to standard assessment data.  For example: Practical skills or selected activities in PE or Music.

These grades can be added to a marksheet grading scheme to be collated by the teacher.
