# Sending notifications of managed detentions to students and parents
Detention notifications can be sent from any detention register that has been set up with notifications enabled. Access the detention register via the **Behaviour** menu, put a tick in the box next to the student(s) you want to send notifications for, and then click on the **Notify** button at the bottom of the page:
This will give you a final pop up prior to sending the notifications:
The message will be sent as emails and/or app notifications depending on your communication settings, the page to edit these choices is under the People \> Communication settings menu. It will also take into account the communication settings chosen by the specific parents and students.
Once the notifications have been sent, the date and time of the notification is added to the detention register, along with S and P icons to identify whether the notifications was sent to students, parents, or both:
The text that is sent uses the name of the follow up action, or alias if provided, the name of the behaviour event, along with the length of the detention and location (if shared):
It is highly recommended to review the wording on your actions and event types, as there is no ability to modify the template notifications.
If you change the location/date/time of a detention that has been notified, you can send an updated notification to students and parents to make them aware. If you have removed a student from a detention that has been notified you are provided an option to notify the student/parent of the cancellation:
