# Setting up a markbook grading scheme
Each markbook uses a **grading scheme** to convert marks into grades. Each grading scheme consists of a list of grades and the grade boundaries. When you choose a qualification or internal grading scheme, a grading scheme will automatically be created for your markbook. The grades in the scheme will be those specified on the Ofqual website for the qualification, or those specified by your school for the internal grading scheme. The grade boundaries will just be default values, evenly spread between 0 and 100%.
You can change the grade boundaries at any time, but it is worth getting them right from the outset as it will give more accurate current grades for students. For instance, you might want to set them to the grade boundaries from previous exam results. To access the grading scheme for a markbook, click the **Edit...** link to the right of the summary of the grading scheme.
You can choose to set the grade boundaries as percentages (where max mark will be 100), or you can use total marks for the course. You can also provide **aliases** for grades which will be displayed instead of the standard grade names when present.
**Advanced use**: You can set a ceiling or a floor on a grading scheme, which will prevent a grade being awarded above/below a certain level. This is useful when designing markbooks for foundation or higher level GCSE subjects. Do not set ceilings and floors unless you need them, as removing them later can cause unexpected results.
