# Student Behaviour Explorer

### **Introduction**

The Student behaviour explorer is designed for to enable users to undertake a more focussed analysis of all aspects of the behaviour recorded in the GO 4 Schools Behaviour module. This guide will show you how to extract information about behaviour classifications, actions, managed detentions, and any attributes marked as **Use for the analysis of behaviour**.

### **Navigation**

The Student behaviour explorer can be accessed from the **Behaviour** menu.

### **Initial selections**

The explorer initially loads with no data. You need to choose a date range and a set of students.

![Graphical user interface, application, table

The student picker allows the selection of students from Year/Registration or House and will include all events raised for the chosen set of students. To enable the House menu the student attribute for House must be marked for the analysis of behaviour, and data needs to be present from your MIS. When choosing from the Department/Subject/Group, you will only see events recorded for the students if the behaviour event was raised and the group/subject details added.

**Note:** it is important that teachers raise behaviour events from the links in the timetable, from registers, or from markbooks to ensure the group and subject details are added to the recorded event.  If behaviour events are raised from the main menu then the teacher will need to add in details of the group and subject.

The header will then display your choices, quick pick buttons and any filter or sort settings.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-07-2225-PM.png?width=1305&height=90&name=undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-07-2225-PM.png)

You will now see that the explorer looks like other explorers in GO 4 Schools. You can Load/save columns, Add/remove columns, Download as a CSV, and switch to Postcard view. Each column can be filtered and/or sorted, and the columns can be moved or fixed to the left.

### **Choosing your data**

Select your data with some consideration of what you need – behaviour systems can be large and contain thousands of recorded behaviour events. By selecting too many columns the data set can become unwieldy and difficult to analyse to find patterns that you need to follow up and could slow the system significantly. The explorer is restricted to 200 columns, but it should really be used to drill down to specific aspects rather than to create a large broadsheet.

We would recommend that you set up saved data sets for different users with the specific columns selected that will be useful for them to respond to patterns in behaviour data.

Using Add/remove columns works in the same way as other GO 4 Schools explorers. The difference here is the level of behaviour information that you can select. The view here will be dependent on how you have set up your Behaviour module with classifications, events, actions and managed detentions. The basic format will show the following initially, including any of your attribute sets with student attributes used for the analysis of behaviour.

### **Reviewing your behaviour system**

At this point it may be useful to review your classifications and events. The classification menu item will allow you to get summative data based on your classifications, therefore, it would be good to have a nice, clear system.

![Graphical user interface, application

Make sure that you have appropriately named events within your classifications, and use **Code** to identify similar events across several classifications. For example, using DIS for any ‘Disruption’ events will allow you to get a total number of disruptive events across the whole system.

When you allocate actions, these can be analysed by **Immediate** or **Follow up**, and also by action type of Standard, Detention or Managed detention.

### **Analysis by Behaviour classification**

Within the classification menu item, you can choose headline counts and points data – which are also accessed from the quick pick buttons – as well as negative, neutral, and positive classifications.

![Graphical user interface, text, application

Description automatically generated](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-06-2574-PM.png?width=231&height=238&name=undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-06-2574-PM.png)

Within the positive and negative values, you get the option of choosing ‘Counts’ or ‘Points’. As neutral events don’t have points, they can only be analysed by counts.

![Text

Description automatically generated](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-04-0817-PM.png?width=165&height=157&name=undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-04-0817-PM.png)

Then, within the next step, you can choose from any of your classifications.

![Text

Description automatically generated with medium confidence](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-03-4718-PM.png?width=259&height=144&name=undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-03-4718-PM.png)

Please note that there are **\[+all\] \[-all\]** options to select/deselect a whole section. Please be aware of the amount of data you are asking for. If you have a system like the example, you will be able to see the number of events raised at each level of your system within your chosen time frame.

### **Analysis by Behaviour event**

Behaviour events can be broken down into categories of Positive, negative, or neutral. In addition, you can also analyse event data by event code. The code will give you a total of counts for each code that you have assigned within your system.

![Text

Description automatically generated](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-03-6620-PM.png?width=255&height=297&name=undefined-Apr-02-2026-02-50-03-6620-PM.png)

Positive and negative events can be displayed as points and/or counts. Neutral events and codes are only available as counts.  In this example, counts have been selected and then the option to choose which classification you need to explore for each of the individual behaviour events that you wish to analyse.

![Graphical user interface, text, application

Once these columns are displayed in the explorer, you will be able to see a summary of this ‘tree’ in the column header.

![Graphical user interface, text, application

When using **Codes** you need to have an awareness of how these have been allocated. As can be seen above, you can select the name of any code contained in your system. If you have assigned **EFFORT** to **Good effort** and **Poor effort**, by analysing by the **EFFORT** code, you will see a total count of all events using that code. You would not be able to determine whether these contain a mix of positive or negative events. In this example, I could re-assign the codes as **EFFORT+** and **EFFORT-** to differentiate between the positive and negative versions of this event type.

Codes allow you to look at totals of a type of behaviour irrespective of its classification. If I have **Low level disruption(-1)**, **Continued disruption(-2)** and **Persistent disruption(-3)** and give them all the code of **DIS**, I can see the overall number of disruptive events recorded against students, and then have the individual event data to see the various levels of disruption recorded.

### **Analysis by Behaviour actions**

Choosing information by behaviour action allows you to find out which students have had the most isolations, or removal from lessons or praise cards sent home. Actions are initially divided into **Immediate** and **Follow up** actions. The next choice from within these are the total values broken down by **Standard** or **Detention** types, and for follow up actions you also have **Managed detentions** too.

![Text

Again, you can then drill down to finer details by selecting any specific actions by expanding any of the action types.

### **Analysis by Managed detentions**

This information can be accessed through the add/remove columns data picker or can be selected in bulk by using the quick pick box.

![Graphical user interface, application, Word

These columns will show the number of formal detentions that have been recorded against each pupil, and then give you the details of whether they have been attended, escalated, etc. **Escalated** and **Allocated** also have details of overall values and also of notifiable counts.

### **Analysis by Department**

The Department section allows you to drill down to the use of specific behaviour events or actions recorded in a subject or specific group within the subject. The tree system starts at ‘Department’, you can then select the department, the subject within the department, and the year group that you want. At this stage you can see subject specific information for events, actions, or managed detentions. You can also drill in further by selecting ‘Groups’ and then choosing a group and the events, actions or managed detentions that you want to analyse.

Again, the header row contains details of the tree selections for each column.

It would take time to set up, but potentially a school could look at the same behaviour event across all subjects to analyse ‘hotspots’ or areas requiring support. Once the time has been spent selecting multiple columns, you can save the column set and share them with colleagues as a ‘whole school’ data set.

### **Additional data**

As with other GO 4 Schools data explorers, there are default data sets available to add to your column set. An overview of session attendance is included, but you should be aware that this shows current data for the academic year and is **NOT filtered by the selected ‘Event date range’.**

In addition to the default data, you can also select information from any student attribute that is used for the analysis of behaviour. These could be groups that usually require multiple filters such as ‘White, British, Pupil premium boys’, or a specific ‘Intervention group’.

This will allow specific behaviour data to be viewed alongside other holistic information such as Gender, Pupil premium, Attendance%, number of Lates, SEND code, and anything else within your specific context. Using the usual features of data explorers you can then save the set of columns for later use, or change the data into ‘Postcard view’ to create a pupil overview card.

### **Possible applications of the Student behaviour explorer**

**Example 1** – As a form tutor it may be useful to create a column set which includes:

Attendance %

Number of Lates

Managed detentions allocated

Managed detentions completed

Uniform issues

Poor effort

Good effort

This would allow the tutor to go to the Student behaviour explorer, choose a date range such as ‘This week’ and then load the column set. This then shows instantly the holistic data that has been chosen. The tutor may have checked uniform in the mornings, but then a student changes shoes, or puts on jewellery, make up etc. This would show up any students that have subsequently been caught by another member of staff.

**Example 2** – As a Head of Year I want to be able to see the rank order of students and be able to compare this to focus groups such as Pupil premium. I could use:

Overall counts – quick pick

Overall points – quick pick

Pupil Premium

EAL

SEND code

Gender

Attendance band%

**Example 3** – As a senior leader I want to see which students are most disruptive to learning. I can get an overview of the DIS event code, and relevant events, and put that alongside the number of positive events and overall score. This will help to identify the low-level disruption caused by students who gain positive events in some areas, but consistently disrupt other subjects. Columns would include:

Overall counts – quick pick

Event code for disruption

Event names of disruption focussed events

Count of ‘Level 1’ (-1) events at classification level
