# Tracking managed vs standard detentions
When managing [event actions](https://support.go4schools.com/modular/defining-immediate-and-follow-up-actions), there are two types of detention actions. **Managed detention** type actions can only be added as follow up actions and will be the only detention type that will automatically add the student for allocation to a detention session. **Detention** type actions will not add a student to be allocated for a detention session, and are able to be ticked by staff as completed. This action type can be used for informal teacher detentions and events assigned this type of action will appear alongside managed detention types in the CSV detention download.
**Note**: If already using the behaviour module, changing any existing **mandatory** follow up actions to a **Managed detention** type will automatically add any students with an open behaviour event linked to that action to the detention allocation pool. We would strongly advise that you close all existing events linked to the action prior to making this change or create a new follow up action to be set as **Managed detention** and name the old action as **Not used**. You can use the alias to ensure this does not show to parents.
