# Transition Y6 into Y7 Open Data Project

For schools that are making use of the ASCL Open data project to support the transition of students from primary school into secondary school, this guidance document will show how this data can be transferred into GO 4 Schools.  This is to ensure that key information is available to inform your teachers and to support students at the start of their journey in secondary school education.

Joining details are available on the [opendataproject website.](https://opendataproject.org.uk/sixintoseven/)

#### **Secondary Download**

Secondary schools at the final stage of the project can access a download file as below:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-48-5703-PM.png?width=670&height=442&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-48-5703-PM.png)

This file includes the information from primary teachers to show how secure individual student learning is across the four key areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening and Maths.  To enable this information to be used across the curriculum it can be imported into Go 4 Schools via a markbook upload into a sample markbook.  We have created a template markbook which can be copied from the Samples department into you school site.

The file only requires Surname, Firstname, UPN and marks

This can then be uploaded via the ‘Upload marks’ link on the subject page.   Assessments can then be mapped up against the marksheet assessments in the markbook.

#### **Template markbook - Y6 to Y7 Transition Data Project**

**Step 1 – Create a new subject – Transition data**

At the start of a new academic year when your new Year 7 students have been enrolled onto your MIS you can use a feed rule to create a new subject ‘Transition data’.

**TIP** – copy registration groups into a new subject or rename registration groups to make sure your whole year group cohort is included.

**Step 2 – Copy the Transition data template markbook**

Copy the template markbook into your new ‘Transition data’ subject.  The template can be found under ‘Samples’ as ‘Year 6 to 7 Transition’.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-46-7111-PM.png?width=670&height=54&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-46-7111-PM.png)

The template is also visible in the Samples department in the [demonstration site](https://demo.go4schools.com/) so schools can review the content and markbook set up prior to copying the template into their own school site.

The copying of the template markbook will also add the specific internal grading scheme in use to your school site. If your default residual scheme is not appropriate for this markbook, it is suggested that you use the GO 4 Schools whole school current model residual scheme, which can be found from the left hand menu: Residual scheme\>Residual scheme.

Go into the current model scheme for the whole school:

You can then click on the “assign residual scheme” button:

You can then assign the scheme to the Y6 to Y7 markbook for your Y7 students

**Step 3 – Upload the marks from your .csv file into the markbook**

Upload the marks from the transition project file into the new markbook.  You will need to delete columns from the master spreadsheet of results to match the upload csv file:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-49-5077-PM.png?width=670&height=158&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-49-5077-PM.png)

Using the ‘Upload marks’ link at the top of the subject page for the Y6 to Y7 transition markbook, select your ‘transition’ file and select continue to the access the ‘Map assessment’ page.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-47-8138-PM.png?width=670&height=175&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-47-8138-PM.png)

Using the arrows select the column name from your source file to map against the assessment names in the marksheets of the markbook.  GO 4 Schools will then show a Summary view for you to check the mapping before selecting ‘Upload all valid marks/grades’.

**Reviewing the markbook set up**

Once copied into your school site you may wish to review the settings in the template markbook to suit your requirements.    The template is set up so that Maths and English Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening marksheets are all equally weighted.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-47-3753-PM.png?width=323&height=453&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-47-3753-PM.png)

The flags for High Ability in each area contribute to the markbook to indicate if a student has been given this indicator by their primary teacher.  You may want to select the outputs to view in the markbook i.e. a preference to show grade or percentages.

In each key sheet the assessments are ‘summed’ to give a total mark.

**TIP**: You may want to add a note markslot to each key sheet to add a commentary of intervention of support planned for those students who are not secure in key areas.

We suggest uploading a targe t grade of ‘Secure’ for all students so the residual label will highlight all students who are above or below being secure in all 4 keys areas of primary transition.

#### **Reviewing the data**

Using the ‘All groups’ link from the subject page you will be able to clearly see all students colour coded against the four areas of learning. In the example below we have used the GO 4 Schools: Current model residual scheme.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-48-2935-PM.png?width=670&height=182&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-48-2935-PM.png)

Drilling down into a marksheet the specific content can be quickly sorted to view those students who require additional catch up support.  For example, below is sorted ascending to reflect areas of weakness for Times tables:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-47-5878-PM.png?width=670&height=298&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-47-5878-PM.png)

#### **Data Explorers**

Setting up a shared data set in the Subject explorer will allow specific analysis of the data by using the filtering and sorting tools.  Sharing this with curriculum leaders will enable then to see where Year 7 students may require differentiated work and additional intervention to support learning.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-46-9203-PM.png?width=670&height=123&name=undefined-Apr-01-2026-01-23-46-9203-PM.png)

The Year group data explorer can also be used to share headline grades and residual values for comparison against other areas of the curriculum for tracking purposes throughout the year.

#### **Subject ribbons**

Interactive ribbons will allow you to interrogate specific focus groups to make further decisions that will support students across your school curriculum e.g. gender, pupil premium, SEND.

Due to no KS2 SATs data you will be unable to populate the KS2 Prior attainment attributes in GO4S, using the transition data alongside your own school initial assessment data may suggest a grouping for this at a later date.
