# Understanding grade boundaries/schemes in GO 4 Schools

#### **Understanding Grade Boundaries in GO 4 Schools**

This article explains how GO 4 Schools uses the grade boundaries in grading schemes when converting marks to grades and vice versa. The mechanism described applies to all types of grading scheme:

- **Markbook grading schemes** - including those set up for individual marksheets and assessments.
- **Assessment grading schemes** - used as 'template' grading schemes within markbooks for improved consistency.
- **Internal grading schemes** - used for tracking KS1-KS3 without National Curriculum Levels.

It serves as an introduction to the basics of grading schemes, but does not cover the various options for scaling marks, as may be needed for some students following courses at the foundation tier. Scaling is covered in the Curriculum Leader’s Guide.

#### **Grade boundaries**

When you set up a grading scheme in GO 4 Schools, you are specifying the lower boundary of each grade. For example, in the set of grades shown below, any percentage greater than or equal to 60% but less than 80% will be treated as 'Good'.

Grade and boundary

- Excellent (80%)
- Good (60%)
- Satisfactory (40%)
- Disappointing (20%)
- U (0%)

#### **Entering marks**

If you enter a mark of 15 out of 20, this will be treated as 75% and is therefore a grade of 'Good'. Similarly, 12 out of 20 is treated as 60% and is therefore also 'Good'.

#### **Entering grades**

In some cases, you may just want to enter grades, rather than marks, e.g. you will choose a grade from the list 'Excellent', 'Good', 'Satisfactory', 'Disappointing' and 'U'. When you do this, GO 4 Schools records the mid-point of the range of marks covered by the grade.

Grade, range and midpoint

- Excellent (80%-100%). Midpoint: 90%
- Good (60%-80%). Midpoint: 70%
- Satisfactory (40%-60%). Midpoint: 50%
- Disappointing (20%-40%). Midpoint: 30%
- U (0%-20%). Midpoint: 10%

The rationale for this is two-fold.

First, the 'Good' grade covers percentages of 60% to 80%. Rather than assuming that every student achieving a 'Good' grade has just 'scraped' the grade with 60%, GO 4 Schools assumes that they have an 'average' 'Good' grade of 70%. Second, when assessments are averaged, we want to avoid a lower grade unduly affecting a run of otherwise good grades. For example:

- If a student achieves grades of 'Good', 'Good', 'Good', 'Good' and 'Good' you would expect the average to be 'Good'.
- Similarly, if the student achieves grades of 'Good', 'Good', 'Good', 'Good' and 'Satisfactory' you would still expect the average to be 'Good'.

By using the midpoints, GO 4 Schools ensures that the single 'Satisfactory' grade in the second list of assessments does not bring the student’s average mark below the 60% boundary for 'Good'. Explicitly, in the second example, the calculated average is (70% + 70% + 70% + 70% + 50%)/5 = 66% which is still in the 'Good' range. If the lower bounds were used, the calculation would be (60% + 60% + 60% + 60% + 40%)/5 = 56% which is a grade of 'Satisfactory' rather than the desired grade of 'Good'.
