# Uploading Actual grades
Uploading actual grades
The process for uploading actual grades is very similar to the process for uploading target/progress grades, but with the following exceptions:
- Actual grades can be uploaded for previous academic years as well as the current academic year, e.g. early-entry GCSEs or KS2 results (these are loaded to the year they were awarded, generally which is before the students are on roll at your school).
- The subject names for actual grades can match either the subject name in GO 4 Schools, or the qualification code.
- Actual grades can be dated, allowing more than one actual grade to be uploaded for the same student/subject.
These exceptions allow you to:
- Store actual grades for qualifications taken in year 10 for students who are currently in year 11.
- Store actual grades for qualifications not present in GO 4 Schools, e.g. if your students study Astronomy independently.
- Store KS2 SATS for students when they were in year 6, even when they were not on roll at your school.
- Store actual grades awarded to students who re-sat an exam without overwriting their first entry grade which will be used for statistics.
Once you upload the grade file, you will see an additional screen where you can assign an exam date to the grades awarded. If your file contains multiple qualifications, you will see a row for each one:
The date entered does not have to be the exact date of the exam, but does impact statistical outputs. For example, first-entry rules may be applied if a student has taken two subjects with the same discount code. An example would be a student sitting a BTEC in Art, as well as the GCSE - due to coursework entries, the GCSE is typically the result that the DfE will use - it is worth checking the dates in those instances.
### Actual grades for subjects not in GO 4 Schools
If your school was not using GO 4 Schools during the academic year in question, or a student has achieved a grade in a subject that is not held in GO 4 Schools for some other reason, you can still upload the actual grade by specifying either the qualification code or the special qualification name for KS 1 - 3 levels:
Remember when uploading actual grades for an earlier academic year, you must change the academic year that you are uploading to. For example, when uploading KS2 actual grades for Y11 students, you must step back five academic years. You will see the example students change year group in the table, until they appear to be in Year 6. You then manage grades for the students as they were in Y6.
