# Using attendance messaging
With SMS functionality being available, we’ve also enabled attendance communications so that you can contact parents and request they contact you with a reason for absence/lateness. **Attendance communication** is available via the **People** menu:
You’ll be taken to a page that will list all of your students with N, L, or U codes by year group and session (AM/PM). Replies to SMS can also be viewed from attendance communications.
The timetable icon next to the student’s name enables the attendance officer to quickly check the student’s timetable to see if they’ve been marked into any lessons.
### **Composing an attendance message**
Composing an attendance message is very similar to ad-hoc messaging, although there are some limitations in place. You are limited to one attendance code per message – although this can span all of your year groups. The messages are also limited to the students with the aforementioned codes. Once you’ve selected the students whose parents you need to message, click on the compose button. This will give you a pop-up showing which students you have selected to message:
Once you click **Confirm**, you’re taken to the same compose screen that ad-hoc messaging provides, where you can select the recipients, and the channel to contact them on. We have provided pre-written messages for the different channels, and it is not possible to edit these messages.
In the screenshot below, I’m using the SMS functionality to notify the parents that these two students have an unexplained absence, and to contact the school:
There are three recipients, as one of the students has two parents receiving SMS attendance notifications. Once you click “Preview/Send”, a preview window will show, but as its intention is to be used for multiple students, the names/counts won’t display any detail. If you click send from the preview, the messages will then go out.
Once they have been sent, the initial page updates the “History” column to show which method was used to contact the parent
