# Analysing Post-16 Data in Wales

This guidance document is intended to support key stake holders with the analysis of A-level and vocational results using GO 4 Schools. It outlines where key headline information in Welsh schools can be viewed and how to drill down into key focus group analysis at headline, subject and individual class level.

### **Year group level analysis**

GO 4 Schools supports leaders by providing three tables on the year group page displaying the following measures:

- Students achieving 3+ A\*-A L3 quals (or equiv.)
- Students achieving 3+ A\*-C L3 quals (or equiv.)
- Students achieving 3+ A\*-E L3 quals (or equiv.)
- Avg A Level (or equiv.) Grade per entry
- Avg A Level (or equiv.) APS per student
- The previous L3 threshold measure

*\[Note\] We also provide analysis by the average total volume of entries, however this is accessed via the ‘new year group explorer’ link at the top of the year group page. More details are available in the year group data explorer section later on in the document.*

The tables are a simple way of comparing specific grade types i.e. target, current, predicted, mock and actual grades side by side (honouring your settings enabled via ‘**Curriculum \> Grade & residual settings**’). This allows you to consider variation between current, predicted and actual grades, and explore the reasons for the variation.

The following sections contain a brief summary for each of the tables. Tables can be accessed via the Pathfinder menu \> Year group \> Year group key statistics

### **Post-16: Overall statistics**

This top table provides you with an overview of all the key performance measures outlined above which include both A-levels and equivalents.

 ![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-22-2355-AM.png?width=858&height=679&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-22-2355-AM.png)

- Row 1-2: allows you to track the new post-16 value added measures for average total points score per learner and average grade per entry.
- Row 3-5: track the new post-16 attainment performance measures for students achieving 3 A-Levels or equivalents at A\*-A, A\*-C and A\*-E.
- Row 6: Some of the headline measures can be expanded to provide a further detailed breakdown by clicking the black arrow adjacent to the measure, for example the % of students achieving 3+ A\*-E L3 qualifications can be opened up to look at the previous L3 threshold measure of 2+ L3 qualifications A\*-E.

Clicking on the numbers will take you to a data explorer where you are able to filter and add additional fields for further analysis. Further detail of data explorers is provided later in this document.

### **Post-16: A level cohort statistics**

This table provides you with an overview of headline measures excluding vocational courses:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-25-1866-AM.png?width=860&height=635&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-25-1866-AM.png)

### **Post-16: Applied general cohort statistics**

This table displays statistics for the vocational courses studied by your students and allows you to track the percentage of students achieving L3 vocational courses in line with current post-16 performance measures (relevant row highlighted below).

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-5254-AM.png?width=857&height=299&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-5254-AM.png)

#### **Year group data explorers**

The data explorers can either be accessed via the link highlighted below, or by clicking on the numbers described in the preceding section.

[![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-22-7812-AM.png?width=792&height=540&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-22-7812-AM.png)](https://support.go4schools.com/a/solutions/articles/80000968594)

The explorer displays a default set of columns, but you are able to draw in additional fields that are applicable to the context of your school (and focus of analysis) and remove those that are not required. This is accessible via ‘Add/remove columns’:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-0466-AM.png?width=804&height=176&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-0466-AM.png)

You can display any of the student attributes that you have marked for the analysis of attainment data, and that have been placed in an attribute set (please refer to the guidance document entitled **[Summary of new student attribute functionality](https://support.go4schools.com/en/support/solutions/articles/80000794187)**. For example, you may find it beneficial to create a custom attribute for those students who are in the Seren network.

The fields that you select from the left-hand side will appear on the right-hand side and then in the explorer once you click “Ok”:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-4847-AM.png?width=1008&height=569&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-4847-AM.png)

You are then able to filter by these key groups, and the displayed total/averages will be recalculated. The totals and averages do not take into account student statistics rules and are a raw total/average of all data in the column.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-0298-AM.png?width=915&height=229&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-0298-AM.png)

It is possible to save these columns, and share with others, via the **Load/save a set of columns** link in the top left-hand corner of the page. You can also copy the URL link next to a created set of columns to provide a direct link to the set.

You are able to view this explorer as a student postcard by clicking the **Student postcard view** link. This is particularly useful if you are maintaining a ‘war wall’.

A video introducing data explorers can be found in online resources entitled [**New year and subject explorers**](https://www.go4schools.com/schools/Support/OnlineResourceArticleView.aspx?sorid=77).

#### **Tracking average total volume of entries**

Tracking this value-added performance measure is possible by using the new year group explorer and selecting the following fields:

**Grades: Overall values \> Total entries \> APS points** and then selecting the relevant grade fields:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-2720-AM.png?width=1001&height=601&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-2720-AM.png)

From this explorer view you are then able to filter and sort by number of entries as shown in the example below:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-2656-AM.png?width=704&height=220&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-2656-AM.png)

#### **Curriculum Overview Page**

The **‘Curriculum Overview’** link provides a more detailed analysis of the results, including threshold and APS outcomes by subjects:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-7502-AM.png?width=386&height=447&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-7502-AM.png)

Using 'Add table(s) you can select which threshold measure you wish to view by subject, and the **‘Select snapshots’** button allows you to view the data at previous snapshots side-by-side.

Hovering over the percentages displays further details about the statistic and clicking on the percentages displays a pop-out detailing students contributing to the measure, or provides a link to a year group explorer for further analysis.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-9518-AM.png?width=1119&height=487&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-24-9518-AM.png)

#### **Attainment over time page**

A link to attainment over time is via the Pathfinder menu \> Year group \> Attainment over time

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-7598-AM.png?width=419&height=596&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-23-7598-AM.png)

From this page you are able to select your performance measure(s), break data down by key groups (those enabled for the analysis of attainment data), select the visibility of grade types and select snapshots to see how outcomes have changed between data points.

You are able to save these selections or download tables to csv.

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-21-9525-AM.png?width=1865&height=499&name=undefined-Apr-09-2026-09-58-21-9525-AM.png)

You are then able to select any of the performance measures from the headline table broken down by focus group (once again, using the attributes you have marked for the analysis of attainment data):
