# Recording attendance

If your school has subscribed to tier 2 or above of the **Attendance module** you will be able to record session/registration marks via GO 4 Schools. These marks are written back to your school's MIS on a daily basis for your school's census returns. If you are linked as a teacher and have a registration group, your attendance link will be available in the **Teacher** menu. If you are not linked to a teacher, all registration groups are available under the **Academic years** menu.

Clicking the **Attendance** link will bring you to an attendance register page. At the top of the register is a date picker to choose the date range you want to show. GO 4 Schools records who has entered/changed which marks, and when. Marks will typically become read-only to all but attendance officers after one day (depending on your school's configuration). If your school is using tier 3 of the attendance module, you will see columns for lessons as well as sessions.

- You can click on an empty cell to record an attendance mark for a single student. Your school can choose which types of mark you can enter. These will usually just be **present, late, or absent** marks, generally attendance officers can enter all marks. Certain marks are also protected, and you may not be able to overwrite those - you'll need to discuss those with an attendance officer.
- You can click the **+** to enter the same mark for an entire group - existing marks will **not** be overwritten with this option.
- You can click the **\>** to show additional columns in which you can enter **minutes late** or a **note**.
- There is a **Save** button at the bottom of the page, you will be prompted to save your marks if you try to move away from the page without saving first.
- The **H** button in the top left corner allows you to highlight specific types of mark.
- The **C** button switches between compact and full views the compact view allows you to see more information on the page at the same time; the full view is the default view, and is easier to use on mobile devices.
- By default the **Filter by...** shows all students, but you can change this to view only students with particular types of marks.
- There are icons to view student photos, create a behaviour event for the student (if the behaviour module is in use), and to the student timetable.

If your school timetables registration periods so they appear on your daily timetable as lessons, or if they coincide with lessons, you will also be able to access the registers via the **clock icon** on your timetable:

If your school has subscribed to tier 3 of the **Attendance module** you will be able to record lesson attendance marks via GO 4 Schools. Although session marks are written back to your school's MIS on a daily basis, lesson marks are not, as they are not required for your school's census return.

To access a lesson register, you should first navigate to your timetable, via the **Teacher menu**, and then click on the **clock icon** for the lesson you want to record attendance:

![](https://supporttest.go4schools.com/hs-fs/hubfs/undefined-May-08-2026-01-46-00-4778-PM.png?width=780&height=163&name=undefined-May-08-2026-01-46-00-4778-PM.png)This will then take you to today's register for the students timetabled for this group in this period. This will show any previously recorded session and lesson marks for students. Session marks are shown in columns with blue backgrounds to distinguish them from lesson marks.

However, it will also allow you to record different marks if you need to, for instance, if a student is so late for a session that they need to be marked as absent, but is considered to be present for the lesson. GO 4 Schools is also able to identify linked/consecutive lessons and will auto-populate these with the mark entered in one. As above there is a **Save** button at the bottom of the page and you will be prompted to save your marks if you move away from the page without having saved them first.
