Grade types

GO 4 Schools supports several types of summative grade/levels; baseline grades, target grades, and progress (or achievement) grades. There are multiple versions of these grades available to your school to allow the most flexibility, however it means that some of the grades below may not be used, or may have had their names modified by your school:

Baseline grade

Baseline grades are used to store a student's ability level at the beginning of an academic year and are useful for calculating a student's progress. Baseline grades can be added to GO 4 Schools via a few routes. They can be:

  • Entered in the baseline column in a markbook - for the current academic year only.
  • Uploaded by your school data manager - for any academic year. Baseline grades for previous academic years can be linked to subjects.

Target grades

Target grades are grades that students work towards. They are often set early in the year by the school data team or teachers and seldom change during the year.

  • The External target typically will have been uploaded to GO 4 Schools by your school data manager. External targets typically come from Fischer Family Trust.
  • The Teacher target is usually used to fill in gaps in the external targets. If present, it overrides the external target.
  • The Target grade is used to select between the two targets above to present a single, unambiguous target to parents and students. When an external target and a teacher target are both present, the teacher target takes precedence.
  • The Aspirational target provides a place to track aspirational targets for students.
  • The Additional target is available if your school requires another type of target.

Progress grades

Progress grades are grades that record how students are performing in practice, whether current, anticipated or actual. They are compared to target grades to measure residuals, or compared to baseline grades to measure progress.

  • The Current grade is calculated from marks entered in marksheets, if you are using the full version of GO 4 Schools. If using the Starter version, the current grade will need to be uploaded, or manually entered. If using manual entry, the grades available in the drop-down will be based on the qualification you have linked the markbook to.
  • The Projected grade is typically used to record the grade the school expects the student to achieve by the end of the year. For instance, for KS3, students are expected to progress through the year, so a student may have a current level of Emerging now, but be expected to reach Secure by the end of the year. This is often the higher of two grades if a student is on a borderline, as it is often shown to parents and students. This may be locked a few weeks into the term by your school, to help track accuracy of projections.
  • The Honest grade is available if schools would like to track what a classroom teacher thinks a student is most likely to achieve. This may be the lower of two grades if a student is borderline, and is usually not shown to parents and students. Many schools will rename this grade to ‘Mock exam’ for KS4 and KS5 year groups, so progress from exams can be compared.
  • The Actual grade will also appear in markbooks when these have been uploaded to GO 4 Schools by your school data manager.
