Marksheet types

The marksheet types available differ by markbook type.

Standard markbook marksheet types

There are four types of marksheets available for standard markbooks:

  • Standard - Each sheet contributes to the overall mark via its weighting, which can be zero (e.g. for homework marksheets) or greater than zero. Assessments can be recorded as marks, grades, checkboxes, or notes. The mechanism by which assessments within the marksheet can be combined by can be varied, e.g. average, sum, etc.
Advanced use: The grading scheme used by marksheets and/or assessments can be customised if necessary, e.g. to adjust grade boundaries or to remove grades for tracking foundation and higher students side by side. If no grading scheme is to be set up explicitly, then the markbook grading scheme will be used instead.
  • Foundation/Higher - Typically used where students are sitting past papers from courses that offer foundation and higher tiers and where UMS marks are not available or not applicable. Each assessment within the marksheet can offer a different range of grades. Either marks or grades can be recorded for the assessments; if marks are entered, they are converted into grades behind the scenes. The best grade in the sheet is then used in calculations for the overall grade.
  • AQA ISA/PSA - Intended for use with AQA GCSE Science qualifications. Assessments are either type ISA or PSA. ISA assessments are marked out of 34, and PSA assessments out of 6.  The overall mark for the sheet is the sum of the best ISA and the best PSA marks. The weighing of the sheet defaults to 40, to correspond the number of UMS points typically assigned to the combined ISA+PSA mark.

Vocational type 1 markbook marksheet types

There are four types of marksheets available for vocational type 1 markbooks:

  • BTEC internal (teacher-led) - Each sheet typically represents a unit and is worth a specific number of credits if passed by the student. The sheet can be marked as core, mandatory, or other. Each sheet has it's own grading scheme from which unnecessary grades can be removed, and each grade in the grading scheme has a multiplier that is used to convert the credit value of the sheet into points. Each assessment is tagged as being required for a pass, merit, etc and the student is awarded a pass for the sheet only if they have delivered on all pass assessments. They must also complete all merit assessments to be awarded a merit, etc. There is a special tag available that allows a sheet to have a Teacher's minimum unit grade. This allows the teacher to set a baseline grade that the student should be awarded for the unit even if they have not completed enough learning outcomes to actually achieve that grade. If the student exceeds the minimum grade, the higher grade is awarded.
  • BTEC external assessment sheet - External assessment sheets can record the result of one or more attempts at an externally assessed unit. The sheet can be marked as core, mandatory, or other. Each sheet has its own grading scheme from which unnecessary grades can be removed. The marks achieved for the external assessment can be matched against the correct grade (pass, credit, etc.) and the relevant multiplier that is used to convert the credit value of the sheet into points. It is important to note that the points value will take the lower threshold of the points value for the grade and contribute these to the qualification. Each assessment within a sheet should be based on a test result. If mock tests are in use the aggregation can be altered to calculate the average or even total the marks from an exam paper for question level analysis. We recommend that once an external exam result is available that the aggregation is adjusted to Best of the rightmost to ensure that only assessments from external assessments are contributing to the overall qualification.
  • BTEC external raw marks to points sheet - For qualifications where the raw marks achieved in the external exam are mapped directly to specific points that carry forward for the unit this sheet allows the correct points per assessment to be used in the qualification calculation. This sheet also has the additional options of Must pass, Must study, or Optional. The Must study option will enable marks below a pass grade to be entered but the points will still contribute to the overall qualification with a permissible U grade.
  • Zero-weighted - As per a Standard marksheet above, but with the weighting set to zero. Intended to add a flexible type of sheet that does not contribute to the current grade.

Vocational type 2 markbook marksheet types

There are only two types of marksheet available for vocational type 2 markbooks:

  • NVQ-style sheet - Each sheet represents a unit and is worth a specific number of credits if passed by the student. The sheet can be marked as mandatory if it represents a required unit. All assessments are mandatory, and are marked using the markbook grading scheme. There is a special tag available that allows a grade to be marked as a Teacher's minimum unit grade. This allows the teacher to set a baseline grade that the student should be awarded for the unit even if they have not completed enough of the elements to actually achieve that grade.
  • Zero-weighted - As per a Standard marksheet above, but with the weighting set to zero. Intended to add a flexible type of sheet that does not contribute to the current grade.

OCR National markbook marksheet types

There are only two types of marksheet available for OCR National markbooks:

  • OCR National-style sheet - Each sheet represents a unit and is worth a specific number of Guided Learning Hours (GLH) if passed by the student. The sheet can be marked as mandatory if it represents a required unit. All assessments are mandatory, and are marked using the markbook grading scheme. A best fit  grade is calculated for the student once all assessments have been marked.
