Progress Grades

Progress grades are grades that record how students are performing in practice, whether current, anticipated or actual. They are compared to target grades to measure residuals, or compared to baseline grades to measure progress.

Current grade

This is the student's current grade, based on assessment data entered into markbooks

(Note if using the starter version, no assessment data can be entered)

Projected grade

The grade that a student is anticipated to achieve based on their current position. This is often the higher of two grades if a student is on a borderline, as it is often shown to parents and students.

Determined by school policy but can be set to be edited by school managers only, school managers and curriculum leaders, or all staff.

Often entered by classroom teachers after a few weeks of teaching the students. Once entered, some schools lock the projected grades; others allow staff to change them.

Honest grade

The grade a classroom teacher thinks a student is most likely to achieve. This may be the lower of two grades if a student is borderline, and is usually not shown to parents and students.

Determined by school policy but can be set to be edited by school managers only, school managers and curriculum leaders, or all staff.

Often entered by classroom teachers after a few weeks of teaching the students. Once entered, some schools lock the honest grades; others allow staff to change them.

Actual Grade

The grade that a student achieved at the end of a (formal) course. These could have been awarded in the current academic year or in previous years, e.g. early-entry GCSEs. This grade can also be used for tracking students’ grades at the end of Year 6 (Key stage 2).

Primary Schools could use the end of Year 2 (Key stage 1).

This data can only be uploaded by the school data team.
