Subjects on Rotation

GO 4 Schools collects data from the timetable in your school's MIS to create subjects and groups. Markbooks can then be created for each of the subjects, the general rule being one markbook per subject per year. In some cases, subjects and groups need to be manipulated in GO 4 Schools to match the courses taught within the school. This can be achieved using feed rules.

If you have subjects taught on a rotation basis, the timetable may show this as ‘PSE’ but there could be a number of subjects within this which may need to be reported/recorded separately. Please see below some examples:

Example 1

Students are split into groups studying different topics of the same subject on a rotational basis. For example, the timetable for all students shows they are studying technology, but one group studies food in term 1, another group studies graphics and another group studies D&T. The students will receive a final grade/mark for the overall subject of technology and have target grades for technology at the start of the year.

Process:
Create one markbook for the subject technology; you would then create 3 marksheets within the markbook called Food, Graphics and D&T with weightings set accordingly. Teachers would then need to fill in the marksheet that relates to their own lesson and over the course of the year as the students rotate, the marksheets for each subject will be completed and a final grade awarded for the subject as a whole.

Uploading grades:
As all groups are studying the same subject and there is only one markbook, target grades can be uploaded for that subject as usual.

Statistics:
Again, as technology is classed as one subject in GO 4 Schools with one markbook, statistics will be calculated in the usual way. So the residual ribbons for that subject will display target grade verses current grade for technology. There won’t be any individual statistics for food, graphics and D&T.

Example 2

Students are split into groups studying one subject in term 1 and another in term 2 and are timetabled as such. The qualification for each subject is different, the students have a target for each subject and achieve a grade/mark for each subject.

For example, during the course of the year students will take the two subjects Art and Textiles on a rotational basis gaining a final grade for each course.

Process:
Identify the subjects that form the rotation, e.g. art and textiles
Add a rule to copy all groups from art into textiles
Add a rule to copy all groups from textiles into art
Your art and textiles subjects will then contain all students no matter whether they are timetabled to be in art or textiles at the current time.

Uploading grades:
As the subjects are ‘separate’ in GO 4 Schools and the students appear in all subjects, you will need to upload a target grade for each student in each subject.

Statistics:
As the subjects and grades entered are entered individually, there will be statistics for each subject art and textiles.

Notes about feed rules

New feed rules do not come into effect straight away, changes are only picked up after a new feed is received and processed that night. You will see the impact of the feed rule the next day.
Feed rules are applied in sequence, it is possible to change the order feed rules are applied by moving them up/down the table on the Manage Feed Rules page.
